Fact-checking the debate

What do the Republicans and Democrats have in Common Regard of Ukraine? A Tale of Two Candidates, One Candidate and Two Campaigns Toward a Solution

Neither candidate was asked about Ukraine, where these two campaigns have fundamentally different views, and Vance, in particular, has been a vocal critic of U.S. aid for Ukraine.

Walz didn’t have to account for his military record timeline or his misstatements on carrying weapons of war. Vance wasn’t asked about his “stolen valor” accusations about Walz’s service, either.

Moderators can only fit so much into a debate, but there were some things that have gotten attention in this campaign that weren’t brought up — some of which involve the vice presidential candidates directly.

One of the biggest issues in America is people don’t agree on facts. People affirm what they believe and not have their minds changed, even though there are conflicting evidence, in part because they have their own ideologies.

In place of trusting traditional sources of knowledge, Trump has played to cultural grievance, telling people there are simple solutions to complex problems — like suggesting tariffs will pay for child care, which they will not. Voters should trust Trump more than anyone else according to Vance. “For the first time in a generation, Donald Trump had the wisdom and courage to say to that bipartisan agreement, ‘We’re not doing it anymore.’” “

The right has moved away from believing experts in the last decade of American politics. The Democrats had their own issues with being perceived as condescending to working-class voters. Republicans, like Trump, have exploited that.

The Real Tim Vance: What Happened in the First and Only VP Debate Between a Republican and a Democratic Democrat

Vice Presidential candidates governor Tim Walz and US senator JD Vance faced off last night in their first and only debate. Will Vance’s repackaging of Trump’s record on issues like abortion and January 6 land with independents and swing state voters? Where was the fiery Walz who won social media by calling Republicans “weird?” And will any of this really matter on election day? WIRED’s Tim Marchman and Makena Kelly join Leah to discuss.

Instead of making a statement that he misses the point, Walz said, “I will talk a lot,” which could be seen as saying you can’t believe everything he says.

In addition to foreign policy, Walz was weakest in his response to questions about his time in China. Walz has said he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests, which took place in the spring of 1989. Minnesota Public Radio and others have reported that he didn’t actually travel there until later in the summer.

Even though his popularity is low than any VP in modern history, another Vance showed up Tuesday night and was mostly respectful of his opponent. It’s not the same as being booed at rallies when a reporter asks a question, but the people at CBS are more than welcome to thank.

When it comes to style, the man that was clearly more polished than the other one, was referred to as Vance, and he appears to be more rational and agreeable than the other one. But there’s a real question about who the real Vance is. He was once a Trump critic, who became one of Trump’s biggest cheerleaders. Since that transformation, he’s gotten a reputation as a hard-charging MAGA partisan willing to take on all comers, known for making controversial statements, whether about “childless cat ladies,” not caring what happens to Ukraine “one way or another” or propagating false claims about immigrants eating pets.

Partisans on both sides will have arguments for why their guy did well at certain times and not as well at others in the first and only vice-presidential debate Tuesday night between Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz.

Tim Marchman: I thought it was done very reasonable by the man, and that he was done a great job. If I didn’t know anything but what I saw in this debate, I would think he has very different policy positions than he actually has. I am not sure what he thinks about issues like whether climate is a hoax, whether Israel should attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, or if he thinks Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. It wasn’t so much a moment, it was the kind of river of him being evasive in what I thought was a pretty successful fashion.
