Matt Gaetz and the House of Representatives: Where are we coming from? Where do we stand, and how do we move forward with the vote?

The first step toward ousting McCarthy was taken by Rep. Matt Gaetz, who made good on his threat to file a motion to vacate on Monday night. And McCarthy told reporters Tuesday that he will bring up the motion to vacate today, but it remains unclear how much support he has.

McCarthy still appears to have the support of the majority of the 221 House Republicans, and some even tried to convince Gaetz not to move forward with the vote, despite their own frustrations with McCarthy, as NPR has reported.

McCarthy is accusing Gaetz of harboring a grudge over his refusal to quash a congressional ethics complaint against him over allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug use that emerged in 2021, telling CNBC on Tuesday morning that Gaetz has “personal things in his life that he has challenges with.”

“Will I get removed because four or five Republicans joined with all the Democrats? “That is the question here,” he said. How strong is the continuity of the government when 98% of conference want you to be speaker and you create a Congress where four people can determine if they work with the other side?

Emerging from their weekly caucus meeting on Tuesday morning, Reps. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., and Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., told reporters that House Democrats agreed to vote together against saving McCarthy in any way.

What are we doing in the House of Delegates to help the Republicans? How we’re going to make a difference for the American people

“There is reason after reason to just let Republicans deal with their own problems,” Jayapal said. They should be wallowing in their incompetence and inability to govern.

House Democrats are not saying what they are going to do. Some are suggesting that they’d be happy to help McCarthy, but not without a cost.

Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark, the House minority whip, told Morning Edition before Tuesday’s meeting that she was not aware of McCarthy having offered any concessions.

She said it was important for Democrats to think about whether they would even want a deal with McCarthy, as heeroded any of their trust in the future.

Clark noted that the GOP infighting — which she described as a “full-scale civil war” — has an impact on “people at home who are worried about the GOP’s attacks on Social Security, on our public schools, on the freedom of reproductive rights in this country.”

We will look at all the things we do in the House and see what is the best way to make progress for the American people.

Support for President Biden and former President Donald Trump is neck and neck among registered voters, according to NPR’s latest poll. Trump’s voters are more enthusiastic — 43% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they’d be “very satisfied” if Trump were nominated compared to 30% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents who would be “very satisfied” with Biden. Independent voters say they won’t vote for Trump if he’s convicted of a crime.

The manufacturers of 10 medications have reluctantly agreed to negotiate with Medicare about their prices more than a month after Biden announced the first ten drugs selected for price negotiations. More than a third of the companies that make drugs on the list have sued the federal government, but all the companies have signed agreements saying they will negotiate.

It might be hard to remember how much progress has been made, because of the difficult task of resolving the global climate crisis. Climate change efforts are paying off in unexpected ways at the NPR Network. Check it out and read more about it.
