The NBC News Miami Debate of the Electoral Candidate Tom Haley and Sen. Tim Scott (D-Nevada)
The third debate for the Republican presidential nomination will take place in Miami tonight. NBC News is hosting the debate at the at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, which will air from 8pm to 10 pm ET,
Donald Trump, the front-runner in the Republican race, will skip the event for a third time after the Republican National Committee confirmed his name late Monday.
Lester Holt and Kristen Welker of NBC will moderate the debate, alongside Salem Radio Network’s Hugh Hewitt. The debate can be seen on NBC News and its streaming platforms.
Under criteria set by the Republican National Committee, candidates needed to have at least 70,000 unique donors (up from 50,000 for the second debate) and to record at least 4 percent support (up from 3 percent) in either two national polls or one national poll in addition to two polls from early-voting states.
Trump has been attacking the democrat, while also facing GOP criticism over abortion access laws and his response to immigration. He has widely been seen as the most viable GOP opponent to Trump, but his campaign has faced challenges including staffing turnover.
Haley, who served as governor of South Carolina and ambassador to the UN under Trump, has climbed up the polls in some states. New Hampshire is among the early primary states and although Trump is still topping the polls, voters warn he shouldn’t take their votes for granted. In the second GOP debate, Haley sparred with Scott over energy policy and made an quip about Ramaswamy, who was also her opponent.
He used platforms like TikTok and podcasts to gain attention among young voters, although that drew criticism from other candidates. The former tech and finance executive advocated against the environmental, social and governance movement and “woke”-ism. Ramaswamy received a boost following the first GOP debate.
Sen. Tim Scott —Another South Carolina contender, Scott brings a diverse background and upbringing to the white-dominated Republican party. Over the last several months, Scott has turned to border policy as a key issue. He has criticized President Biden for not visiting the border, and instead visiting picketing autoworkers, and said that issues at the border should be more pressing than climate change. During the first debate, Scott said he would complete the border wall, increase domestic job creation, and said states like California and New York can’t be allowed to “have abortions on demand” until birth.
The 2020 Supercongressman’s Anatomy: Donald Trump (R-FL) Sen. Tim Scott, U.S. Sen. David H. Haley, and the State of the Art
Trump held a rally with non-union autoworkers in Michigan and gave an interview to Tucker Carlson on X, a show that is known for its talk about politics.
This will be the smallest slate of candidates on stage yet. The only people that met the criteria this time around were South Carolina Governor Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and businessman-turned senator Tim Scott.
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, who was in the first two debates, did not qualify this time around. Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who appeared in the first debate, hasn’t qualified for these last two events. Pence won’t be on stage tonight after dropping out of the presidential race.
The former president didn’t make it to any of the Republican debates because he didn’t meet the polling and fundraising thresholds. He did not meet the qualifications, which require candidates to pledge to support whoever wins the nomination. Trump has flat out refused to sign that pledge: he has also said that he doesn’t want to elevate his opponents by being on stage with them.
Just like in the last two debates, though, Trump is planning some counter programming. He will hold a rally in nearby Hialeah, Fla., during the debate. Cuban American voters are a group of voters that Trump has done very well with. In 2020, Trump outperformed expectations specifically with Latino voters in South Florida.
Haley is expected to get all the attention as an alternative to Trump. She has shown increases in support in the polls. She was on the receiving end of strong debate performances. There were expectations that he would fill that role. His campaign has had a number of mistakes, as well as some lackluster performances in the last few debates.
