Mayorkas thanked the distinguished members of the independent review, who would bring decades of expertise in law enforcement and security operations to the investigation.
According to reports, Cheatle rejected claims that the agency had denied requests for additional security for the Trump team.
Cheatle was subpoenaed to appear before the House Oversight Committee following the shooting at Trump’s western Pennsylvania rally. She has not been called to testify before Congress before in her 29-year career.
The agency is conducting its own internal review, and is cooperating with the FBI, Cheatle told lawmakers. However, she was unable to answer most direct questions about the findings of her investigators, citing the ongoing nature of their work.
The concerns are expected to be echoed repeatedly in what’s expected to be a hours-long hearing that could last much of the day. It follows a growing list of investigations into the shooting and the Secret Service.
“In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee,” Guglielmi said in a statement to NPR. It is possible to use state or local partners to provide specialized functions or otherwise identify alternatives to reduce public exposure of a protectee.
There were several denied requests for magnetometers at public events that were included in this. The July 2023 rally in South Carolina was not possible because the Secret Service didn’t have countersniper teams available.

The frustration with her was bipartisan. Police chiefs would agree with her when she denied that the prevalence of guns had made her job more difficult.
In the end, even the ranking Democrat on the House oversight committee, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who prosecuted Trump’s second impeachment trial, called for her resignation.
The value Democrats and Republicans tend to place on the federal bureaucracy has been an essential dividing line between the two camps, even before Ronald Reagan’s inaugural incantation that “government is the problem.”
