The Nevada Republican Party wants to host a Caucus on Thursday (Monday, August 17th) to “Protest” 2021 Election Laws

“As the late great Harry Reid always reminded us, if you can win in Nevada you can win anywhere,” Harris cheered. “We are going to prove you right again, Harry, President Biden and I.”

The vice president paid tribute to the late Nevada Sen. Harry Reid and held her own rally at the same time.

The state Republican Party’s message is not the same as the RNC’s, which wants Republicans to vote early on in a presidential election.

There is a catch: Only the caucus awards delegates, which means that Trump is the only viable candidate before any votes are even cast.

But Republicans will have another opportunity to vote later this week — because the Nevada Republican Party, who wanted to do a caucus, like they did before, pushed back against the 2021 laws. In order to “protest” the state-run primary, the party will be hosting their own caucus on Thursday. Per the rules, candidates participating in the caucus cannot also have their name on the ballot of the primary.

New election laws implemented in that time period included all-mail voting, expanded voter registration and the move of the presidential contests from party caucuses to state-run primaries.

Why Las Vegas is the First in the West: Why Democrats and Republicans are Picking a Swing State to Vote Early Against President Biden

Thirty percent of Nevada’s population identifies as Latino. With support from unions and rural voters, Asian American and Pacific Islanders are the fastest-growing demographic in the state.

“In general, Las Vegas has been very transient, and so oftentimes we have to establish those connections for the first time,” said Fabian Doñate, the Latino Legislative Caucus chair. “Our population is very diverse compared to the rest of the country, and so that’s why we’re first in the West.”

Democrats and Republicans are racing to close the margins in November. In 2020, President Biden won the state by less than 3% of the vote. Democrats plan to use the results to figure out how to focus their efforts on voters.

One of the six swing states is Nevada, and it is the first swing state to vote early, giving candidates a testing ground in the general election.

Trump will be back in Las Vegas on Thursday for a caucus result watch party — though he is already expected to win because he is the only viable candidate in the caucus.

According to an NPR analysis of data from the tracking firm Ad Impact, Haley’s campaign spent zero dollars advertising in the state of Nevada. She will instead focus her attention on South Carolina, where there are polls to be held at the end of the month.

Instead, the former South Carolina governor will have to spin a loss in a primary where she was the only major candidate on the ballot. Nevada voters have a “none of these candidates” option on their primary ballots which received the highest percentage of votes.

According to the Associated Press, Haley lost the Nevada primary due to voters turning to “none of the above” options.
